Food + War
A visual montage cuts together fragments of food industrialisation, standardisation, privatisation, the development of preservatives, livestock and the dependency on global logistics. It links challenges around food to military technology and warfare operations. Dynamics of power and control within the food sector correlate military operations – directing or blocking supply of food, using famine, reduced and monitored supply or occupation of infrastructures as a means of control and power within conflicts. The map of worldwide hunger (2015 FAO Hunger Map) appears similar to the map of ongoing conflicts and with that these maps show the common coexistence of food scarcity and conflict. In contrast conflict areas, the EU, for example, has an abundance of food; An annual 88 million tonnes of food waste states this fact. While ‘enough food is produced globally’, as the FAO states, ‘there are still 800 million hungry people’. These facts speak of the human costs and challenges to the logistic and industrial nature of contemporary food supply and to the misuse of food as a tactical weapon. In a largescale montage, Food + War compiles moments and media coverage of the past ten years to frame correlations between the two industries of food and war and the resulting social impacts. [The work was commissioned and funded by the Museum für Kunst & Gewerbe , Hamburg]
