Conzoom
Conzoom intervenes in the setting of urban consumer spaces. The fictive character of a clownish traffic regulator announces activities and communal events within this public space. The character seeks to re-orient bodies, following the traffic of a shopping hub, into the lines of public non-capitalist activities - activities other than material consumption. The announced situations were based on collaborations with local communities such as the slag-line community, yoga studios and communal workshops. These activities were provided to the public in the city centre of Eindhoven, the Netherlands. The motivation is to re-claim the public space which in the example of Eindhoven is occupied by commercial activities after the urban planning of Phillips in the late 60’s. The consumer focussed city centre prioritises consumerism over other public activities within the 'Third Space'. “Consumerism describes the cultural industry of capitalism. It marks a substitute for the political activity of one self. Industry de-signs de-sires (lat. from the stars) through the veins of media and representation. The drive for consumption is triggered and evolves throughout time into an automated programmed habit – a norm.”
